As we get older, the family dynamic tends to turn, with kids suddenly feeling the need to look after and take care of our parents, regardless of the relationship we have with them. Well, one mom doesn’t think that should be the case, and she’s now gone viral sharing her opinion on TikTok.
TikTokerLisa Pontiusrecently posted a video in which she expressed her belief that kids “don’t owe their parents anything,” and it quickly went viral with over five million views. She says while she’s “grateful” for what her mom’s done for her, she notes once they are adults, “Children don't owe their parents a certain kind of relationship, and depending on the parent, they might not owe them respect, either."
“It's a parent's job to provide for their children,” she adds. “It's a responsibility. Not everyone rises to the occasion.” She explains to parents, “You're not loving and providing for your children with the expectation that they will blindly obey and do whatever you say as adults." Finally, she offers, kids, “don't owe you sh*t because you took care of them."
- Lisa got thousands of responses to her post, with most people agreeing with her take. Lisa, a mother herself, tells Buzzfeed she does believe that her kids don’t “owe me anything once they are grown just because I birthed them,” although she hopes by the time they are adults she “will have earned their admiration and respect,” although it’s not guaranteed.
- "I hope parents, especially parents of younger kids, take away how delicate this relationship is that they are building with their children,’ she explains. "That they will one day be adults and get to decide if they want you around, and hopefully you've given them a reason to want to."Check out the video to the right.
