Hosting Big Dinners Can Be More Stressful Than Rushing To Catch Flight

When you put family together with holidays, stress is bound to happen, especially if you’re the one hosting. But as stressful as hosting a holiday family gathering can be, is it really more stressful than trying to pass the SATs? New research says ...yup!.

A new survey of 2000 U.S. adults who celebrate Easter finds:

  • More than three-quarters (78%) think having a large family dinner at home is stressful and 59% say Easter itself is stressful.
  • The average person has hosted five large dinners at home during the last 12 months. Those include meals that celebrate big life events (22%), having a lot of family over (21%) and having guests over in general (19%).
  • The biggest things hosts worry about include how much food they need to make (41%), how clean their home is (40%), how much time they need to cook (40%) and if guests will like the food (39%).
  • Close to half (48%) of respondents are planning to host an Easter gathering this year, with an average of five guests attending.
  • Grocery shopping in general is stressful for 59% of those surveyed, but that balloons up to 80% when it’s grocery shopping before hosting an event.
  • The average host starts planning their dinner seven days in advance and food shopping six days in advance.
  • People spend an average of 41 minutes grocery shopping at one store, but 67% of those polled say they “always” or “often” have to go to multiple stores to get their weekly groceries. The average shopper visits three different stores to get the food they need.
  • The top things respondents consider less stressful than hosting a dinner are catching a plane before the gate closes (49%), dropping their phone (48%), passing the SATs (44%), leaving their phone at home (43%) and spilling a drink on a white shirt (43%).
