Wow, the game of tennis is not going to be the same! Serena Williams has just announced that she will be retiring from professional tennis.
In a piece in Vogue, told in her own words to writer Todd Haskell, she says "these days, if I have to choose between building my tennis résumé and building my family, I choose the latter."
Williams said she was "reluctant" to admit that it was time to move on from tennis, and that "it's like a taboo topic" with her family, especially her mom and dad.
One factor in her decision is her five year old daughter Olympia who has said many times that she wants to be a big sister.
Serena said in the article, “Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family.” Serena's departure is definitely a huge loss for the game of tennis.
