Rhode Island's departments of Health and Environmental Management say West Nile virus has been detected in the state for the first time this year.
A mosquito sample collected in Providence on June 29 has tested positive for the virus.
Officials say the statewide risk level for West Nile virus is currently medium.
Throughout mosquito season, the state gathers samples from different areas and tests them for West Nile, Eastern Equine Encephalitis and other diseases.
