A Senate-passed bill to regulate self-checkout in Rhode Island grocery stores is now in the House where there is similar legislation.
It would require markets to maintain at least one staffed checkout for every three self-checkouts.
Supporters said it would improve customer service especially for the elderly who may struggle with self-checkout technology.
Opponents argue it is government micro-management that could increase labor costs for grocery store likely to be passed on to customers.
