RIDOH, DEM Recommend Avoiding Contact with Slack Reservoir

The Rhode Island departments of Health and Environmental Management are advising the public to avoid contact with Slack Reservoir in Smithfield-Johnston due to harmful algae blooms.

Officials say all recreation activities including swimming, fishing, boating and kayaking are high risk and should be avoided at the location.

The blue-green algae bloom can produce toxins that can be harmful to humans and animals.

People or pets who have come in contact with the contaminated water and are experiencing adverse symptoms should contact a healthcare provider.
