Rhode Island's House Speaker is expected to step down today to pursue a seat on the state's Supreme Court following the retirement of an Associate Justice in March.
Joe Shekarchi must apply by the Judicial Nominating Commission's deadline to be considered for the list that will be submitted to Governor Dan McKee.
The governor will then nominate one person who must be confirmed by the General Assembly.
House Majority Leader Christopher Blazejewski is expected to replace Shekarchi in the state leadership position.
