Providence Mayor Vows To Veto Rent Control

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley vows to veto a rent control measure if it reaches his desk.

A plan released by members of the City Council would cap annual rent increases at four percent, although a significant number of apartments would be exempt.

The mayor said a cap would almost certainly mean rent increases annually and that building more housing at all price points is a better solution.

Support from ten of the 15 city councilors would be needed to override a veto.

The City Council takes up the issue tonight.
