Rhode Island U.S. Senator Jack Reed is commenting on the Trump administration's decision to reverse course and greenlight the sale of NVIDIA's H200 chips to China.
Reed, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, questions whether it's wise for the U.S. to lift the export controls and allow the advanced computer chips to supercharge China's AI factories, capabilities, and infrastructure.
Reed says without a broader AI export control strategy, China could be gifted with technology to make its weapons more lethal and the ability to carry out more effective cyberattacks against American businesses and infrastructure.
“This flawed, transactional decision without a broader AI export control strategy could gift China’s military key technology gains and seems completely divorced from any consideration of America’s economic and national security interests,” noted Reed.
