The Providence City Council has given first passage to a more than six-million-dollar funding ordnance for the Mile of History project.
The goal of the project is to improve infrastructure along Benefit Street which attracts over 300-thousand tourists annually.
The historic street is known for its Colonial and Early Federal buildings and home to civic, cultural and religious institutions.
During last Thursday's vote, supporters argued improvements are necessary for public safety while opponents voiced concern about prioritizing funding for just one area of the city.
