Rhode Island Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse are among Senate Democrats supporting the Flight Delay and Cancellation Compensation Act.
It would require airlines to provide passengers with monetary compensation for flight delays.
It would also mandate reimbursement for meals, hotels and transportation as a result of flight disruptions.
Senator Reed said "travelers shouldn't have to foot the bill for airline-caused flight delays or cancellations."
