A Rhode Island Superior Court judge has issued a statement after ICE detained a court intern in Providence.
The teenaged intern was taken into custody outside of the courthouse Thursday morning and placed in an unmarked SUV.
A spokesperson for the court system told ICE agents they wrongfully detained the intern and after ICE verified the information, they released the teen.
Rhode Island Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Suttell says this "egregious incident underscores both the community's and the Judiciary's concerns about how ICE is conducting its operations in Rhode Island."
Governor Dan McKee is reacting to Thursday's ICE detention of Rhode Island Superior Court intern.
The governor says the wrongful detention of the high school student was an outrageous and indefensible act that could have upended a young person's life. He says Rhode Islanders should not have to fear federal agents operating with such "reckless disregard for the law and human dignity." The governor says it was not a harmless mistake - it was the direct result of callous and chaotic policies by the Trump administration. He says ICE's failure to exercise due diligence is shameful and it underscores how broken and dangerous the federal policies are.
There has been no comment from ICE.
