Gov. McKee Declares State of Emergency Over SNAP Benefits

Governor Dan McKee has declared a state of emergency over the planned suspension of SNAP benefits next month.

McKee says up to six million dollars from the state's Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program will be distributed to feed some 20-thousand families.

He's urging residents to donate to local food pantries if they can. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse this week called on the government to release the funds.

He says instead of working with Democrats, the Trump administration is preparing to hold SNAP benefits hostage to inflict further pain on American families during the shutdown.

Across Rhode Island, residents are turning out to help others who will soon lose their SNAP benefits.

Owners of the Pizza Nomad say they're offering free pizza at their Coventry and West Warwick locations.

The Good Neighbors food pantry and hall in East Providence is offering free meals in their dining hall.

The Natural Elements Salon in Wakefield is running a food drive until December 23rd.
