The Providence City Council Committee on Ordinances has advanced an amendment limiting how police cooperate with ICE.
City Council Chief of Staff June Rose says the changes include a ban on data-sharing with federal immigration agencies unless accompanied by a criminal warrant signed by a judge.
The amendment also would prohibit police from using city funds, personnel, or resources to assist in immigration operations.
During Monday's meeting, Rose said the amendments aim to better protect residents by expanding prohibitions on voluntary police cooperation in immigration enforcement.
A full council vote is set for October 16th.
