Rhode Island legislative leaders say there will be an oversight hearing following an engineering audit on the Washington Bridge.
The forensic audit claims Governor McKee's administration may have overlooked decades of deterioration on the bridge and officials may have known about the structural issues long before the bridge was shut down for safety reasons in 2023.
On Monday, House Speaker Joe Shekarchi and Senate President Val Lawson issued a joint statement saying they were deeply troubled by the findings of the forensic audit, and the General Assembly intends to conduct a rigorous oversight hearing, where all options remain on the table such as putting state officials under oath.
