House Proposal to Rename Pell Grants After President Trump Spurs Debate

A proposal in the U.S. House to rename the the federal Pell Grants program after President Trump has sparked debate and dissension among lawmakers.

A proposal in the House Spending Bill would rename the Pell Grants -- named after Rhode Island's longest-standing senator, Claiborne Pell -- to Trump Grants.

Representative Gabe Amo says renaming the program to honor President Trump would run counter to what the Pell Grants represent.

Representative Seth Magaziner says Pell Grants have opened windows of opportunity for millions of people, while President Trump has been trying to eliminate the Department of Education.

Earlier this year, Trump recommended cutting the maximum loan allowed under Pell grants by 16-hundred dollars but the House restored the cut.

Pell passed away in 2009.
