Judge Frank Caprio has died at the age of 88.
The news comes just hours after the beloved jurist asked for prayers from the public because of a "health setback."
The announcement of the retired judge's passing came from his son in a social media post.
"Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond. His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
He will be remembered not only as a respected judge, but as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. His legacy lives on in the countless acts of kindness he inspired.
In his honor, may we each strive to bring a little more compassion into the world — just as he did every day."
Governor Dan McKee issued a statement on the judge's passing:
“On a personal level, he was a friend who faced his illness with bravery, and I will miss him dearly. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
“Whether you grew up watching Judge Caprio on television or first saw his kindness touch lives around the world on social media, there is no question that his legacy will leave a lasting mark across generations," the governor said.
And, Senator Jack Reed is remembering the beloved judge as well.
"“Judge Caprio’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and people across the globe whose days were brightened by watching a clip of ‘Caught in Providence.’ My thoughts are with Judge Caprio’s beloved wife, Joyce, and the entire Caprio family, the senator said.”
Flags across the state will be lowered to half-staff in the Judge's honor. They will remain that way until services are completed.
Funeral services have not been released at this time.
