A bill that would ban cell phones in Massachusetts classrooms has been approved by a legislative committee.
The measure would require all school districts in the commonwealth to have a policy restricting access to devices like phones before the start of the 2026-2027 school year.
The proposal has been approved by senators on the Committee on Education.
Senate President Karen Spilka says the cell phone is one of the most distracting devices ever created.
She says evidence is overwhelming that cell phones are major barriers to achievement in the classroom.
