Governor Dan McKee has signed legislation that bans the sale of certain military-style weapons in Rhode Island.
The law bans the manufacture, purchase, sale, or transfer of some semi-automatic rifles and shotguns.
It allows lawful owners to possess the firearms and sell their firearms to federally licensed dealers or individuals outside of the state who can lawfully possess them.
Violations are punishable by up to ten-years in prison, a ten-thousand-dollar fine, and firearm forfeiture.
The law takes effect on July 1st.
