A Rhode Island Senate committee has approved its version of an assault weapons ban.
The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a scaled-back version of the House measure by a vote of eight to six on Wednesday.
The Senate bill bans the manufacture, purchase, sale or transfer of certain firearms, but it doesn't ban the lawful possession of the weapons.
The full Senate is expected to consider the revised measure on Friday.
It is unclear whether the House, which already passed its version of the measure, would take up the bill.
Friday is expected to be the last day of the legislative session.
