Smithfield Police Note Increase In Black Bear Sightings

Smithfield police are letting the public know that there's been an increase in black bear sightings.

Rhode Island has a small but growing black bear population in the western and northwestern parts of the state, but the bears are generally not a cause for concern since they're often transient and avoid people.

Police say sightings have been reported in neighborhoods near wooded areas and residents are reminded to remove bird and squirrel feeders and secure garbage containers, especially if they contain food scraps.

Bear sightings should be reported to the RIDEM Division of Fish and Wildlife and the Smithfield Police Department.
