As the warmer summer months approach, the Rhode Island Department of Health and the Department of Environmental Management are reminding the public to be on the lookout for harmful algae blooms.
Officials say the HABs are caused by the excessive growth of blue-green algae that can produce toxins that are harmful to humans and animals.
RIDOH and the DEM work together to monitor and respond to the algae blooms and recreational advisories are issued when the levels become dangerous for the public.
In addition, pet owners should not allow their animals to drink or swim in the water.
