Up to ten-percent of the city's municipal workforce will reportedly be cut in Providence if the city is not allowed to exceed the state-mandated tax rate.
Mayor Brett Smiley is seeking a one-year increase in property taxes above the usual four-percent limit to seven-and-a-half percent.
His 624-million-dollar budget proposal depends on the extra revenue.
The Mayor's plan to raise the tax levy for one year is still in the legislature. It has not been reported out of a Senate committee yet.
