Brown Divest Reacts To Student Group Suspension

Brown University has suspended the Students for Justice in Palestine chapter temporarily, citing alleged unacceptable conduct at an October 18 protest.

The Brown Divest Coalition organized the demonstration after the university corporation voted not to divest from companies invested in Israel.

In a statement, the university says it has started a review of the event which allegedly involved threatening, intimidating and harassing actions.

Brown says protest is a necessary and acceptable means of expression on campus, but it cannot interfere with normal functions of the University or infringe on the rights of others.

The Brown Divest Coalition is responding to the university's temporary suspension of Students for Justice in Palestine amid allegations of unacceptable conduct during an October 18 protest.

The coalition says the action is a continuation of the university's efforts to "intimidate anyone and everyone who attempts to hold Brown's governing bodies accountable for their explicit support of genocide, apartheid, and scholasticide."

In a statement, the group says by prohibiting SJP from holding events, the administration has debilitated the sole organization on the campus dedicated to creating space for collective grief amidst the "indiscriminate slaughter of Gazans carried out by the Zionist regime."
