The Diocese of Providence is reacting to Salve Regina University renting space on its campus for a political fundraiser.
In a statement, the Diocese says it does not permit Catholic institutions in Rhode Island to endorse candidates for office or give the appearance of endorsements.
The Diocese says it was surprised and disappointed by the decision of Salve Regina University to rent space to a partisan political event.
A Salve Regina spokesperson says it regularly rents facilities on campus for private events.
The university says the Democratic Committee paid the standard rate for the space rental and it was the sole host of the event.
